Hestercombe Gardens, Taunton Slideshow
During the Summer of 2005, on Tuesday 8th July, South West In Bloom judges visited Plymouth as part of the citywide Plymouth In Bloom 2005 competition. As part of the judges visit, part of their judging criteria was to judge one of the cities 33 allotment sites. This year it was Rowdens Reservoir's chance to impress the judges with their mass of crops and layout of plots.
Following this visit by the South West In Bloom judges, the Plymouth City Council Parks Services managment staff who made the whole of Plymouth look the way it did for the judges, were invited to the awards ceremony at Hestercombe Gardens, near Taunton in Somerset.
In appreciation of his effort and commitment to preparing Rowdens allotments for the judging, our secretary was also invited to the ceremony.
On Thursday 8th September 2005, Luke and the Plymouth City Council staff went up to the awards where they had a chance to look around the glorious Hestercombe Gardens grounds and to go to the awards and gardeners questions time.
Once all the major awards had been given, there was an announcment of a new award entitled South West In Bloom Youth Award. Just when Luke and the others were preparing to head back to Plymouth, the judges announced Lukes name and the people began applauding. As Luke made his way up the front to collect his certificate and trophie, the judges talked of how Luke is the youngest known secretary in the UK and his efforts and appreciation of gardening would take him a long way. A photo with the Lord Mayor of Taunton and the RHS President, Sir Richard Carew-Pole topped ended the day and party made their way back to Plymouth to celebrate.
Well done Luke!!!
