Rowdens Reservoir Allotments currently have about 50 plots on site, some of
which are split into two halves. Our site is one of 33 allotment sites across
Plymouth. Plymouth City Council own the land and maintain each site to meet the
requirments of its tenants. The council works very close with all tenants to make
sure that everyone is happy with both their individual plot and the rest of the site.
The following information has been kindly given by Robert; our vice chairman
and tenant of Rowdens for many years.
The allotments site was once part of market gardens which covered that area of
Stoke over as far as Raynham Road. The site is called Rowdens Reservoir
because it lies next to where there was a reservoir many years ago. The
eservoir was where the first factory part of the City Business Park is, i.e. the
furthest away from plots 1-9. the reservoir was there when Robert was young but was later filled in. At first the factory manufactured gloves. The second factory, i.e. the building nearest plots 1-9 was built after and was owned by Bush who somehow turned into Toshiba. They manufactured televisions or some such things. A few people have said that the allotments lie on a cemetery. This is not entirely true. The cemetery was just east of plots 1-3 (behind where plot sheds are built now). It stretched right down through where the evergreen trees are now and down to the Sweb substation is now. It was all graves and it was well overgrown when I was a child. We had fun in there although we always felt it was creepy as we were so young with all these graves etc., around. The cemetery was closed to make way for the substation and those relatives, who wanted to, had their relatives remains moved to other cemeteries. A small gathering of gardening enthusiasts early on a Sunday morning, stood outside of the old allotments trading hut for Rowdens in the late 1990's. The hut has now been sold by the council to a private owner
